Old West Side - Ann Arbor's Most Iconic Neighborhood

The Old West Side has long held its reign as one of Ann Arbor's most desirable neighborhoods. Bounded by main streets, it blends into the downtown area so everything is within walking distance. The tree-lined streets offer sidewalks with easy access to notable attractions such as the Big House football stadium, Washtenaw Dairy, Jefferson Market, Blank Slate Creamery, Argus Farm Stop, schools, parks, restaurants, shops, entertainment, and the University of Michigan.

The area was originally purchased by William Maynard in 1845 who then divided it into buildable parcels. In the economic boom following the Civil War, home construction in this area was steady and continued through the 1960's with a few homes built from the 1970's to the present. Home styles widely vary and include Queen Ann Victorian, Craftsman, Tudor, Traditional, Bungalow, and Cape Cod situated on average sized city lots that are narrow in width with deep back yards. Many of the homes have been remodeled with new and trendy features while retaining the original hardwood flooring, trim, doors, and fixtures or some combination. You will find beautiful gardens, front sitting porches, detached garages, and even a few carriage houses still intact.

The Old West Side is an Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. It has an active association, organized in 1967, that holds community events, distributes a newsletter, promotes neighborhood conservation, and is a resource for homeowners.
